Maple Elementary Schools
Principal: Lauraetta Starks

Welcome to Maple Elementary. We are located close to the Ohio River right across from Louisville, KY, on the Sunny Side of the River. Maple Elementary School is one of twelve elementary schools in the Greater Clark County School District. It is located in Jeffersonville, Indiana. Maple is a full inclusion, inner city school with approximately 325 students in grades kindergarten through fifth grade. The school population is culturally diverse with a poverty level of 61% of our students qualifying for free or reduced lunch. This makes us eligible to receive additional, federal funds through Title I.

As a participant in the school-wide Title I program, we have been able to utilize the funds to help our students to increase, academic achievement as has been demonstrated by their performance on ISTEP+, the Indiana statewide assessment which is administered in September of each year. This has been done because of the willingness of the teachers at Maple to change their instructional practices from the traditional way of teaching to research based practices that help all students to achieve. Click here to see Maple's achievement on the ISTEP+.

Improving literacy is the focus of Maple’s school-wide program, and this has been done with the help of The Learning Network, a research based program designed to meet every student’s needs through the changing of attitudes, understandings, and instructional behaviors of teachers which leads to improved, focused instruction. Maple has used The Learning Network to changes how the entire school organizes for teaching and learning through a comprehensive staff development program.

The training of teachers focuses on the teaching/learning cycle, assessment, planning, instruction and assessment. Maple’s core strategy is to assess the needs of each child, plan instruction at the child’s level, instruct and assess student performance. This process allows teachers to teach to the needs of students in small groups and individually.

Besides the core subjects that are taught to all students, the boys and girls receive instruction in art, music, physical education, and library. Remediation programs, such as Reading Recovery, SOAR and Early Success, Academy of Reading, are used in addition to regular instruction to help those students needing extra help.

Students participate in Young Authors, oratorical contests, music festival, PE carnival, and after school activities such as cross country, basketball, gymnastics, volley ball, wrestling, and track. The YMCA offers an after school program for those students who participate in their day care services.
